It’s inevitable. If you own an RV and you travel around, there’s an extremely good chance that at some point you’ll need to tighten, fix, cut, loosen, hit, or attach something. While we always recommend bringing your RV into a certified service shop (like Mike Rosman RV) we understand that’s not always a possibility and sometimes you’ll have to take matters into your hands.
We’ve listed below the five essential tools every RVer should have when travelling. Ideally, you’ll need more than five and we’ve added some extras to the list below. But if you’re short on space and you don’t feel like hauling an extra trailer for your tools, here are the essentials:
- Ratcheting Screwdriver Set – True, you could just use a selection of Phillips-head screwdrivers but by using interchangeable multi-bit tools you’ll be saving yourself a lot of space and money.
- Socket Set – Ever noticed how many nuts and bolts are on your RV? Sooner or later these will become loose or (hopefully not) fall off. Having a ½, ⅜, and ¼ inch socket set (including the necessary adapters) will ensure you have the right tool for the job when something needs tightening.
- Leatherman – This glorious little jack-of-all-trades tool is what happens when you take a swiss army knife and make it infinitely better. The Leatherman is a foldable multi-tool that, depending on the version you have, can double as various common tools including (but not limited to): pliers, wire cutters, crimpers, knife, saw, can opener, ruler, screwdriver, serrated knife, file, and more.
- Hatchet/Hammer Tool – Sure it looks like something you’d wage into a medieval battle against ogres with, but this multi-purpose tool gives you a useful two in one combo. The hatchet side helps when chopping wood for the campfire and can be used in the unlikely event that a zombie apocalypse breaks out while you’re camping. The hammer tool is pretty much self explanatory.
- Duct Tape – While theoretically not a tool, you have to admit there are few substances on the planet that are more useful when it comes to temporary fixes for common problems like leaks, loose parts, and securing noisy items (like the kids for example).
