RV Holding Tank Care.

Last updated: 10 October 2023

One topic that is never ending is the discussion on which holding tank chemical is best to use. Almost everyone you talk to has a preferred chemical to use to control odour and waste buildup in your RV holding tank.

Before we get into options for chemicals and methods of delivery of the chemical to your tank, it’s important to inform you of some campground requirements. Recently, most campgrounds have started to enforce the use of non-formaldehyde-based chemicals. The reason for this is that many campgrounds use chemicals in their own septic tanks that produce bacteria to control odours, and to liquefy waste. If formaldehyde-based chemicals are introduced into their tank, it will kill this bacteria, resulting in the campground tank producing unpleasant odours.

When it comes to today’s formaldehyde free chemicals, there are a few methods of delivery to the holding tank. The most familiar is the liquid type which requires you to pre-measure a specific amount of chemical to the ratio matching your holding tank size. This system works well. However, for efficiency, you should have a measuring device to ensure your ratio is always correct. Also, be careful to store your chemicals securely to ensure they don’t tip over during travel, otherwise you could end up with a “blue” carpet or cabinet!

The second method that some people prefer is granular form chemicals. Crystals are introduced to the holding tank by measuring a set amount per gallon(s) of waste tank. Some have this measure built into the cap of the container for convenience. The advantage of this type of product is that it is a dry product and, if spilled, it will not soak into the surface it falls on.

The newest method of applying chemical to your tanks is in the form of a drop-in pack. These are pre-measured packets that dissolve when they come into contact with liquid. You simply open up the zip closure foil pack, grab a drop-in, and flush it down the toilet. When it makes contact with liquid, the packet dissolves and releases the chemical.

All of these chemicals are enzyme based, and breakdown the waste to allow for easy emptying and flushing of the tank. They also may include promoters that help to lubricate toilet or valve seals and clean the toilet bowl. Many of them also produce fragrances such as lavender or citrus to mask odours.
