Most people turn to RVing as a more cost-effective way to travel. And why not? You can travel wherever you want, spend time together as a couple or family, campground costs are less than a hotel, and did we mention you can travel anywhere?
Here are some great tips to help you hit the open road for a little less:
Negotiate – Some places, particularly independent RV parks, may be open to a little friendly negotiation, particularly if you’re staying a while. If you’re looking to rent an RV through a rental agency or dealership or use a site like RVshare, there’s a chance you could definitely negotiate the rental rate down a little. There’s no harm in asking.
Plan, Plan, Plan – Detours can cost you extra in gas and waste your time. By planning your route you’ll be able to determine the best way to get where you’re going in the least amount of time. Travelling a longer route unnecessarily can also affect the mechanical performance of your vehicle so there are a number of reasons to know where you’re going and how you’re getting there.
Visit Free Sites – Campsites are obviously ideal but there are some places (like Walmart) that will allow you to stay for free. Why not mix up your trip by skipping the campground and staying at a free site? Or, if you’re adventurous, you could also try boondocking and stay in the wild. While it’s not as convenient as a campground with hookups, you can still have a great time and make full use of your RV.
Keep Tools Handy – If a minor mechanical issue arises while you’re on the road, it might be something that can easily be solved with the right tool and maybe a helpful YouTube video. Keep a good selection of RV tools handy at all times. Of course, if it’s something serious, we don’t recommend you try to tackle it yourself.
RV Care – If you purchased your RV from Mike Rosman RV, or one of the many other RV Care Associated Dealerships in Canada or the US, you’ll qualify for discounts and deals on parts and service, no matter where you are. If you encounter problems while travelling just look for the nearest RV Care dealership in your area and you’ll receive the same great service no matter where you are.
Travel Off Season – Finally, you could consider travelling during the low season. Campgrounds are generally quieter and there’s a large costs saving if you avoid travelling at the peak times throughout the year. Spring and Fall are both beautiful seasons to hit the open road and travel among the changing colours of the seasons.
While it may take a little bit of planning, it’s entirely possible to travel on a budget while RVing and travel for less while still having an amazing time!
