When travelling anywhere in an RV, whether you’re alone, as a couple, or road tripping with the family, it’s important to take the proper safety precautions. Ideally, all trips should be safe, fun, and stress-free, but sometimes the unexpected happens. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help prevent or minimize the chances of unfortunate mishaps on the road. Here are Rosman’s top 5 safety tips for RV travel:
1) Learning to Drive (again)
If you’re a seasoned RVer, you can skip this one. But if you’re new to RVing, or you’ve recently upgraded your RV, it’s a good idea to make sure you get used to driving your new home on wheels. Motorhomes are a lot bigger than most vehicles and can take some practice. If you’re not used to driving with a trailer, there are some things you need to be aware of when it comes to pulling a travel trailer. Weight distribution, braking speeds, etc. So make sure you practice driving, reversing, taking turns, etc. before heading out on your first trip.
2) Insurance & Road Service
When it comes to trailers, some people are often in the dark about the type of insurance you need and whether your auto insurance covers it. Be sure to check with your insurance provider before you purchase or rent an RV so you know your coverage options. The other thing to bear in mind is road service. There are lots of handy apps to help monitor weather and road conditions and it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on where you’re going. For the most up-to-date weather conditions, it’s always best to talk to people. Chat with other RVers or truckers at rest stops and parks.
4) Checklist
You don’t want to forget anything while on a road trip so it’s always best practice to make a list to check the safety features of your RV and to make sure you’re bringing everything you need. Simply do a Google search for ‘RV Checklist’ and you’ll find different downloadable options, often separated by RV type.
5) Get Connected
Wi-Fi connectivity is a big thing these days as everything runs on the internet. Everything. Staying connected while on the road means you’ll always be able to reach someone whether you’re at an RV Park or camping out in the wilds. While Wi-Fi hotspots are available most places, particularly at RV Parks and Rest Stops, there are a number of devices for your RV that can provide Wi-Fi no matter where you are.
