Hitting the road solo, as a couple, or with family or friends is always fun, but sometimes you need a little bit of something to help fill the time, particularly if you’re travelling a long distance. Thankfully we’ve got some ideas to help you fill the time while you’re travelling the highways in search of the next latest greatest camping spot!
1) Music
It seems like a bit of a no-brainer, but music on long road trips helps keep the driver focused, and entertains passengers too. Additionally, you’re no longer limited to the CDs you own or having to have something as archaic as a ‘radio signal’. Internet and satellite radio provides a variety of options for your listening pleasure spanning generations and genres alike. Singing some karaoke on the road can also provide hours of entertainment (unless your singing voice sounds like a cat caught in a ceiling fan).
2) Podcasts
Podcasts are basically internet-based radio variety shows that range in content from, well, everything. Looking for a podcast about your favourite TV show? Movies? Music? History? Entertainment? Comedy? RVing? If you can think it, there’s likely a podcast for it. And best of all, the vast majority is completely free. Download the episodes before heading out on the road and listen to them at your leisure. Some of the best channels to find podcasts are Stitcher, Podbean, or iTunes.
3) Audiobooks
Whether or not you’re an avid reader, audiobooks are a great way to kill some travel time hours. While audiobooks can tend to be on the pricey side, Audible.com has a great monthly subscription service that helps reduce the overall cost. Grab a bestseller, listen to an autobiography by your favourite celebrity, or pick up some non-fiction and learn something new.
4) Maps & Google
This one is a new concept even to us seasoned RVers at Mike Rosman, but Paul and Nina at wheelingit.us suggest pulling out a paper map while on your journey and take a look at some of the sites you’re passing by. Then use Google to look up the history and background of interesting sites, events, or places. Not only does it educate, but it also acts as a great conversation starter, and thanks to everything everywhere being documented on the internet, there’s no shortage of interesting information available.
5) Road Trip Games
While ‘I Spy’ may get old fast, there are a lot of great visual games you can play while you bounce around the country. This is particularly helpful to keep kids entertained, but is just as much fun for adults. Classics include License Plate Scrabble, 20 Questions, the Story Game, and more. There’s also a strangely fun amount of entertainment in waving to other random travellers to see who waves back. Our kids have been endlessly entertained by this on a number of trips.
