You decided to take the plunge and buy your first RV! Congratulations, you’re about to join a community of intrepid adventurers and hit the open road.
But first thing’s first . . . there are a few things you need to do before you pack it up and head out into the wild unknown.
Insurance -You can’t take your RV out on BC roads without proper insurance. Talk to your insurance broker to find the best rate. Most insurance in BC is completed at the dealership so this should only be an area of concern if you’re outside of BC.
Get to know your RV – Spend some time in your RV, even if it’s just in the driveway. Figure out where you’d like your stuff to go, like dishes and bedding. Where are the most convenient places for everything you’ll need for your excursion? If you’ve got a cupboard that won’t quite latch, fix it before you go so it doesn’t drive you nuts later.
Have the right hitch – There’s nothing worse than going to hook up your trailer to your vehicle only to find out the hitch doesn’t match. There are different types of hitches depending on the weight of the vehicle and trailer, so make sure yours match beforehand. Any RV dealership should be able to furnish you with the correct hitch for your RV.
Practice driving with your RV – Driving while towing a large heavy load is a very different experience than driving an unloaded vehicle, so definitely take your RV out on both the highway and city streets. It takes longer to come to a stop as well as to accelerate, and navigating corners will require a little more thought, so take the time to get some experience with your RV on the road. It’ll make your travels that much smoother.
Decorate – Now comes the fun part—making the RV feel like your true home away from home. Pick up things that make the inside feel more decorative—fun bedding, cool cups and dishes, little homey items. But don’t forget the outside! Pick out an outside mat in a pattern you like, some good comfy chairs, and good lighting like tiki torches or fairy lights.
Plan your trip – Now you’ve done all that, start deciding where you want to go in your new RV! As long as there’s a road, you can go pretty much anywhere. Start googling landmarks and campgrounds, make your bucket list, and get ready to roll! RVing in BC alone offers lots of great places to explore.
